Making A Deadly Beverly Hills Street Safer

Posted: Updated:

When we caught up with contractor Jeff Spidey he was a mix of frustration and understanding.

He’s frustrated because he has a job to do. He’s got concrete to pour on a house under construction up in Trousdale Estates, but because of a 30 day moratorium trucks over three tons are prohibited for going up or down Loma Vista Drive in Beverly Hills.

Friday, a third tragic wreck happened on the hill. It was the second involving a cement truck and the second killing a Los Angeles Police officer.

Spidey understands the need to close the hillside road to big trucks while the city tries to figure out how to make it safer, but “I can’t pour concrete for another 30 days and people freakin’ out. What are we gonna do?”

Beverly Hills Police Sgt. Max Subin told me police totally understand that frustration, but right now they have to do what they must to keep from having another tragedy while a special task force tries to figure out how to make the steep street safe for big trucks. Subin says the special task force assembled for it’s first meeting today. It's made up of, among others, members of the city's Police and Public Works Department. He hopes they’ll have some suggestions before the moratorium is up.

Meanwhile, Jeff Spidey says “Right now they’re doing the right thing.” He says they’ve got to figure it out so somebody else doesn’t get killed.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
