Wildwood Officials Set To Vote On Dog Beach Proposal

Posted: Updated:

Wildwood, N.J.- City leaders in Wildwood will soon vote on a new plan that would allow man's best friend on parts of its beaches.

It may be a good idea for some pet owners, but the proposal is not sitting well with everyone.

Fox29's Chris O'Connell reports.

As the summer heats, shore towns are always looking for ways to attract tourists.

Well, Wildwood will vote this week on a plan that may allow an entirely different breed of visitors.

At most Jersey shore beaches in the summer time there's a strict policy: "no dogs allowed"

However, that may soon change.

"It would be nice to have a dog park because you would have a place for them to run," Kelly Ann Mangan said.

The Meehan family from Doylestown, who have 3 dogs, just heard Wildwood is considering dedicating a 1 block stretch of beach near Poplar Street to dogs.

"It's a pain. Because you bring them with you on vacation and you have to leave them in the house the whole entire time," A.J. Meehan said.

But, there is concern about unruly dogs off-leash on a crowded beach in the middle of summer.

"You have so many people come down during the summer, and there is only so much room to begin with," dog owner Rich Kendzior said.

And then there's the bigger issue.

"I see them, they do what they got to do and usually the owners sometimes don't clean it up," Wildwood resident Danny Cardillo said.

The plan is to have plastic bag dispensers, doggie water stations and signs directing owners to clean-up.

The city believes adding one of the shore towns' first off-leash dog beach may help pet lovers choose Wildwood for their next vacation.

Wildwood commission will most likely vote on the measure this Wednesday. If approved, dogs will be allowed to roam on the beach by Memorial Day weekend.

It's a running joke that if you mention the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center to nearly anyone in Hollywood they're going to know exactly what you're talking about because odds are they might have gotten their first big break there. Would you believe some Hollywood's biggest stars -- Meryl Streep, Michael Douglas, Angela Bassett -- got their start in a big red barn in the middle of nowhere.
