Will LA Have a 'Running of the Bulls?'

Posted: Updated:
It's not a done deal, but if Rob Dickens of Boston has his way LA might have a "running of the bulls!" It wouldn't exactly be like what's done in Pamplona, Spain. There, bulls are run through narrow streets to get from corrals to arenas for bullfights. Originally, centuries ago, it was all about moving cattle quickly to sell them at market.

Dickens started his  American bull runs in Richmond, Virginia 8 months ago. It's one of 5 he has put on since starting his "Great Bull Run" company.

In Richmond the local paper there described his event in August, 2013 as thousands of people stumbling and jostling around 1500 pound animals. Dickens had 4 more in other cities and wanted to have one in Southern California. First, he went to Lake Elsinore. They turned him down because they were concerned about safety. Then, when he went to Temecula he decided not to even file for a permit when he ran into resistence. Now, he's trying for the Pomona Fairgrounds and another location he won't identify. If safety is a concern... he says, he can now prove his bull runs on dragstrips, racetracks and in equestrian centers are safe. He says of the 20,000 people who showed up at his 5 events only 2 people have had serious injuries. One was a broken wrist. Another was a fractured pelvis.

Dickens' events also include something he calls a TOMATO ROYALE. It's a tomato fight. Though it sounds like spraying ketchup at each other might be more fun. His event is about tossing tomatoes ... you just can't hit anyone in the head or intentionally try to hurt someone.

Although the Los Angeles County Fairgrounds is not commenting, Dickens has confirmed that he is working with them as a possible location. He is also considering another venue that he will not reveal. He plans to make an announcement on where and when his "LA Running of the Bulls" will be in two weeks.

Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
