Popularity of the Blackhawks surges

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

The Blackhawks used to be the most unpopular Chicago sport’s team behind the Bears, Bulls, White Sox and Cubs.

However, because of how well the Blackhawks have performed the past few years, the team has now surged to second placing right behind the Bears, according to a report by the Chicago Tribune.

The Blackhawks were the only team this year to gain fans. They posted an all-time high 47% fan rating, according to data released Thursday by Scarborough Research.

Last season their fan rating was 32%. This means the team added 1-million new supporters.

"Overall a rise like that is really pretty unprecedented," said Bill Nielsen from Scarborough Research. "For the No. 3 media market, even approaching half the market is impressive. To have a hockey team at No. 2 in any market is pretty rare."

Winning championships obviously helps grab the attention of new fans. The Blackhawks are hoping to capture their third Stanley Cup in five seasons.
