(WJBK) - Gay marriage supporters are launching a statewide campaign to raise awareness of marriage equality.

The educational effort will use television and online advertisements as well as social media to try to increase support for gay marriage in the state.

In March, federal Judge Bernard Friedman ruled in favor of April DeBoer and Jayne Rowse, a lesbian couple with three children.

The judge ruled the state's ban on gay marriage is unconstitutional. Hundreds of same-sex couples went to county courthouses to get married but the appeals court quickly issued a stay, putting gay marriage in Michigan on hold.

Now, Equality Michigan is mobilizing an education campaign called Michigan for Marriage. They want to get the issue on the ballot in 2016 in case the courts don't rule in favor of gay marriage.

While the education campaign continues, the DeBoer-Rowse case will make its way through the appeals court over the summer.
