Police: Man Blew Off Hand With Illegal Explosive Device

Posted: Updated:

Germantown, Pa.-A Philadelphia man now faces a slew of charges after ATF and police search his Germantown home, just hours after they say he blew his hand off with an explosive device.

Fox 29's Drew Dickman reports.

The district attorney’s office says Douglas Ferrin was unconscious Thursday evening at Einstein Medical Center.

We’ve learned this isn’t the first time he’s faced explosive related charges.

SkyFox flew over the scene as ATF and Philadelphia police surrounded his home on Queen Lane Wednesday morning, searching for explosives.

Just hours earlier, authorities said the 54-year-old Ferrin blew off his hand with an illegal explosive device.

“He was out here, at like four o’clock in the morning, I heard him just screaming, like oooh, help," neighbor Robert Lawton said.

Neighbors said the blast sounded like a quarter stick of dynamite.

They had no idea Ferrin had anything like that in his home.

“He’s a very smart guy, very talented and a tremendous artist, painting and very good musician, but apparently he’s got half a brain and now he’s got half a hand. You play with fire, you’re going to get burned," neighbor Teddy Smith said.

Three years ago, Ferrin served 162 days in the Chester County Prison after pleading guilty to Reckless Burning or Exploding.

Court records said he blew up a toilet at an Irish pub in Phoenixville on a Saturday night.

When they traced it back to Ferrin, the documents said he had explosive materials in his hotel room.

The Palm Beach Post and South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported in 2003 that a grease fire started by Ferrin caused an explosion after it spread to five pounds of gun powder.

“That’s scary, that’s scary, so hopefully he won’t get out," Lawton said.

In the past year and a half, several people on the block say someone has been throwing large fireworks at their homes and around the gas pumps at a nearby Sunoco.

Now they’re wondering if that someone was Ferrin.

“I’m just glad he didn’t blow up the gas station where I used to work. The guy deserves to be in jail, hand or no hand," neighbor Gilbert Rosa said.

ATF said the device that exploded has been sent to the laboratory for analysis, but they won’t confirm if anything else was taken from the house.

Ferrin is facing several charges including manufacturing or possessing Weapons of Mass Destruction.

Once he gets out of the hospital, he will then be sent to jail.

Every day, those who live and work in the Gowanus section of Brooklyn drive and bike and walk across their canal, growing a little more accustomed to but no less disgusted by its scent and appearance. Once the busiest canal in the United States, the Gowanus now bears the distinction as perhaps the most polluted body of water in the nation. No one knows exactly how polluted because few have summoned enough courage to dive into its murky depths to investigate.
