Belly button surgery: $3K for an 'innie'

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

With bikini season just weeks away, many women are going a different route to get that perfect tummy. Dr. Matthew Schulman, a New York-based plastic surgeon, has had patients requesting surgery to turn their belly button from an "outie" to an "innie." he says he does three to four navels a week.

When Karen Valerie developed a hernia after the birth of her second child, her navel started poking out much further than she liked, making her self-conscious. She said it didn't look right with clothes; it was visible through some attire. Karen's "fix" took only about 45 minutes to do.

Patients are first given a local anesthetic and then Dr. Schulman makes a small incision around the inside of the belly button. Then he either fixes the hernia, or removes the skin, or reshapes the belly button -- or a combination of all. Schulman says recovery time is about a day or two, and the confidence it brings can last a lifetime.

The surgery costs around $3,000, which Karen says was small price to pay to give her the body she truly wants.

"I think that if a small procedure can help you feel more confident and make you feel better about the results you're achieving through trying to stay fit, eat and work out, then I'm all for it," she says.
