Two Men Seriously Injured In University City Car Accident

Posted: Updated:
Police say a traffic accident sent a pedestrian plunging off an elevated roadway in Philadelphia, leaving him critically injured after a 45-foot fall and one of the drivers critically injured.

Fox 29 has confirmed the passerby injured in the accident is a University of Pennsylvania graduate student.

A police spokeswoman said the accident happened shortly before 10 a.m. Tuesday on 30th Street near the city's main train station.

Police say Driver #1 was traveling westbound on Walnut in a Toyota Camry as Driver #2 traveled southbound on 30th Street in a Mercury Montego.

The two cars collided causing Driver #2 to spin out of control and hit the overpass wall where a 27-year old white male plunged over the bridge falling 30 feet. He was found unresponsive below the elevated roadway.

Investigators say the student tried to grab hold of this traffic light pole to escape the colliding cars, but instead the driver of the blue car swerved into the pole knocking it and the victim off the overpass.

Police are investigating whether the blue sedan blew through a traffic light before being t-boned by the red car.

The student landed 20-ft. from where Leroy Jackson was standing.

“We heard a boom upstairs big loud noise like something hit something that's when we see light pole come crashing down then, we see him come crashing down with the pole,” witness  Jackson said. "That's when we ran over here made sure he was all right tell him don't move don't move."

The 43-year-old driver of the second car was taken to the hospital in critical condition with head injuries and possible broken legs.

The student is in critical condition at Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania along with one of the drivers. The 43-year-old driver of the second car was also taken to the hospital in critical condition with head injuries and possible broken legs.

Penn surveillance cameras appear to have captured the crash. Video that investigators say they'll use to figure out exactly how this happened.
