NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Two soldiers assigned to Fort Drum in northern New York were killed in separate incidents on the same day in Afghanistan in, the Department of Defense announced.

Sgt. Shawn M. Farrell II, 24, of Accord, N.Y., died April 28, 2014, in Nejrab District, Kapisa province, when enemy forces attacked his unit, the Pentagon said.

That same day, Pfc. Christian J. Chandler, 20, of Trenton, Texas, died in an attack in Baraki Barak District, Logar Province.

Both soldiers were infantrymen with the 10th Mountain Division's 3rd Brigade Combat Team. Farrell was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry, while Chandler was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo ordered that state and U.S. flags on state government buildings be flown at half-staff on May 1 in Farrell's honor.

"On behalf of all New Yorkers, I extend my deepest sympathy to the family, friends and fellow soldiers of Sgt. Shawn Farrell," Cuomo said. We are deeply saddened by the loss of this young man, who served our state and nation with honor. We will remember his service with pride."

Farrell joined the Army in September 2006, trained at Fort Benning, Georgia, and deployed to Afghanistan in November 2013. It was his second tour there.

His awards and decorations include the Army Commendation Medal, two Army Achievement Medals, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Expert Infantryman Badge, the Air Assault Badge, and many more, the Army said.

Farrell is survived by his wife and parents.

Chandler joined the Army in October 2012 and also trained at Fort Benning. He deployed to Afghanistan in October 2013.

He had earned the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the NATO Medal, the Combat Infantryman Badge, and more, the Army said.

Chandler left behind his mother and stepfather.

Astorino blasts Cuomo over Moreland Commission

    Wednesday, July 30 2014 6:54 PM EDT2014-07-30 22:54:36 GMT
In 2013, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo created a state panel to investigate public corruption, called the Moreland Commission. But the governor is accused of interfering with investigations and compromising the commission's work. Republican Astorino, who is running against Cuomo, claimed Cuomo didn't hand over evidence to State Police. Astorino wants a special prosecutor to find out if any state and federal laws were broken.

Archeologists say they've solved a mystery that started with the rebuilding at ground zero. During the excavation at the World Trade Center Site, workers uncovered part of an old ship. No one knew where it came from. Now after years of study, researchers believe the sloop dates back to 1773, built from wood harvested from Pennsylvania, the same kind used to build Independence Hall.

"A mixed bag": That's how the Straphangers Campaign characterizes New York City subways; some good parts and some bad. For example, the C train breaks down most often, not surprising since the line has 50-year-old cars. But C trains were also the cleanest in the transit system.Straphangers said the worst subway trains were the IRT's No. 2.
