Former ASU star Andrew Walter files for Congress

Posted: Updated:

PHOENIX (AP) - Former Arizona State and NFL quarterback Andrew Walter has officially entered the Republican primary for Arizona's 9th Congressional District.

Walter filed nominating petitions at the Arizona Secretary of State's office Monday. He filed more than 2,100 signatures, more than twice the required number.

The 31-year-old played at ASU from 2001-2005 and broke multiple school records. He then played for the Oakland Raiders and New England Patriots for four years.

Since retiring, he's earned an MBA, worked for his own credit firm and as a banking analyst.

Walter faces Republican Wendy Rogers in August's primary. Rogers is a retired Air Force pilot who has outraised Walter, but he says he's raising money and has a strong grassroots organizing effort.

The winner takes on Democratic Rep. Kyrsten Sinema in November.
