PONTIAC, Mich. (WJBK) - Police say a 3-year-old child was attacked by a pitbull Thursday evening in Pontiac.

The child and his father were visiting the home at the time of the attack. The child was playing with an 8-year-old child in the backyard. The dog was secured on a long leash.

Suddenly, police say parents inside heard the boys screaming. The 8-year-old child also received bites to both of his hands trying to pull the dog off the younger child.

Oakland Co. Undersheriff Mike McCabe says the 3-year-old has "severe facial cuts to his head [and] face. His left eye is very, severely damaged. The doctors say he may lose his left eye but he hasn't yet." He has undergone surgery and is expected to undergo several more, and will likely have permanent scarring.

FOX 2's Robin Schwartz reports the owners turned in the dog without protest, and it has since been put down. The animal is said to have been up to date with its vaccinations.

The family had recently adopted the dog from their neighbors. The dog had no history of aggressive behavior and had been around other children before.

Police will turn the case over to prosecutors, but do not expect any criminal charges.
