Teens use CPR to save classmate having seizure at Butler bus stop

Posted: Updated:

A group of students from the Morris County School of Technology saved a classmate having a seizure Wednesday morning at a Butler bus stop.

Brooke Gurnari, 17, a junior at the school’s Health Care Sciences Academy, saw the boy's face turn blue and began chest compressions for 10 minutes before emergency responders arrived, according to News12.

Health Care Sciences Academy students are certified in Red Cross, CPR, AED and First Aid during their freshman year.

Gurnari, a Bloomingdale resident, coordinated the rescue effort as Brandon Russo, a junior auto body student from Butler, held down their classmate who was convulsing and Peter Brower, a senior welding student from Butler, performed rescue breaths, according to the Daily Record.

The group's rescue effort worked as the boy began breathing again and quickly regained consciousness, the Daily Record reported.

Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
