Ladybugs

Posted: Updated:

Just as our plants, flowers and landscapes are springing back to life, many seasonal bugs are returning as well. There are actually many beneficial bugs that help keep plants healthy. One of the most recognizable of these insects is the ladybug!

Why a Ladybug?

  • Ladybugs feed on bad bugs/pests like aphids, scale, mealybugs, spider mites and other common pests
  • They are ferocious eaters – eating as many as 5,000 aphids in their lifetime

Encourage Ladybugs to Stay In Your Garden

  • Have plants that produce pollen or nectar
  1. Dill
  • Herb that needs full sun
  • Can grow 3-5 feet
    2. Alyssum
  • Deer resistant and Fragrant
  • Can grow up to 2 feet in full sun

    3. Milkweed

  • Can grow up to 6 feet tall
  • Perennial with pinkish-purple flower clusters

    4. Cosmos

  • Daisy-like flowers
  • Can grow up to 2 feet in full sun

Releasing Your Ladybugs

  • Keep them cool in a refrigerator before releasing them. This will slow them down and keep them in a more hibernation state like they naturally do when it is cooler outside.
  • They will be thirsty when you release them so water your garden down before releasing them.
  • You won’t need to do this again because they will get the needed moisture from the bugs they eat.
  • Release them at dusk when they are the least active and less likely to fly right away.
  • Put them at the base of a plant. If you have a plant with an aphid problem, release the ladybugs at the base of that plant.
