Woman shot, killed at Gary home

GARY, Ind. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A mother of three was shot to death early Thursday at an northwest Indiana home where she had been staying with a girlfriend, the Post-Tribune is reporting.

The woman’s name was not being released until investigators can notify family, Lake County deputy coroner George Deliopoulos said.

The woman has an address on the west side of Chicago, but Deliopoulos said it appears she had been living at 339 Wilson St. in Gary, where she was killed about 4 a.m.

Police are questioning adults who were at the house when the shooting occurred, Violent Crimes Supervisor Lt. Jack Arnold said. No one has been arrested.

The shooting on Wilson Street concluded a series of events that began about 1:30 a.m. at the Methodist Hospitals Northlake campus in Gary at 1:38 a.m. Cpl. Timothy Komoscar was off duty working security at the hospital when he arrested Tyronda Martin, 23; and Carl Brown, 22, both of 339 Wilson St., police records show.

Two other adults who apparently also lived there went to the Public Safety Facility to inquire about bonding them out, but left without doing so, Arnold said.

Then, minutes after 4 a.m., the woman was shot and died. Police at the scene said there were several young children in the home, but did not provide any details. The victim’s children were taken into custody of child welfare workers, police said.

The pre-dawn homicide was the second in less than eight hours in Gary.

Justin Beecher, 24, of Merrillville, was shot in the head and died outside JR’s Liquors at 401 Fillmore St., a statement from the Lake County coroner states.

Beecher was shot about 9:20 p.m. He had at least two recent drug-related arrests, pleading guilty last year to possession of cocaine and maintaining a common nuisance, the result of a traffic stop by Gary police.

Arnold said no one is in custody on the homicide.
