Identity Protection Bill Signed into Law

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA, Ga. -   With a stroke of the governor's pen, a new law that could help protect your identity now goes into effect.

Republican State Senator John Albers says his bill, now law, will prohibit public disclosure of private information in court documents.  Albers says, “The bill will impact every Georgian, because we are going to protect identities.”

The bill’s origin, in a sense, began when an eagle-eyed constituent, wanted to look up an old traffic ticket on Fulton County's brand new court Web site.

Rob Morello noticed his traffic ticket also contained his social security number, and his date of birth.

He alerted Sen. Albers who crafted a bill that prohibits the disclosure of social security numbers, financial accounts, and taxpayers IDs in court documents.

Rob Morella and his family were invited to observe the bill signing. A proud day for one man who saw a problem and wasn't sure he could fix it. But with help, he did.

“Very exciting, Dale,” Morella told the I-Team,  “I'm really glad, as the senator says, this is an example of when government really works.”

Taking on a big bank, even over something like a minor bank error, can be maddening. You feel like no one is listening. It's like being trapped in a maze you can't get out of, but somebody is noticing how frustrating that can be.
