Evan Gattis lifts Braves over Marlins after 10th inning walk off homerun

ATLANTA - The Atlanta Braves defeated the Miami Marlins Monday night 4-2 after a walk-off two run home run in the bottom of the tenth inning. After playing a marathon 14 inning game Sunday night the braves played in another extra-innings game the next night.

Julio Teheran followed up his complete game shut-out in Philadelphia with another solid pitching effort giving up only one run through seven innings and striking out eight batters. A clutch RBI single by Jason Heyward in the 7th inning put the Braves up by a run.

The Braves went into the 9th inning leading the Marlins 2-1 when manager Fredi Gonzalez brought in star closer Craig Kimbrel. Kimbrel would then give up a game-tying run earning him his first blown save of the season. Kimbrel would settle down and retire the next three batters to keep the game tied at two.

The game remained tied until the bottom of the tenth inning when Braves catcher Evan Gattis stepped up to the plate after a leadoff single by Dan Uggla. Gattis then belted a deep ball past the left field fence that ended the game giving the braves a 4-2 victory.

The Braves will play game two of their three game series against the Marlins Tuesday night. Former UGA pitcher Alex Wood is the projected starter for the Braves and will be facing off against Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez.

Fernandez won the rookie of the year award in 2013 and is already off to a great start this season. Wood is starting the 2014 season red hot and has started four games posting a 2-2 record with a 1.67 ERA.
