Atlanta to receive new MLS franchise - New York News

Major League Soccer comes to Atlanta

ATLANTA, Ga. -

Atlanta soccer fans are rejoicing as a brand new soccer team is coming to the city.

Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank announced the approval of the new Major League Soccer Team at a press conference Wednesday afternoon.

Blank will become the owner of the team and he expects the team to play in the new Falcons stadium in 2017.

The MLS was created in 1993 in an attempt to grow the sport's popularity in the United States. The League now has over 20 teams and is followed by fans nationwide.

The news of the team has come with a mixed bag of reactions. Doubters of the team feel that Atlanta will not be able to support the new franchise. Poor attendance numbers were one of the reasons The Atlanta Thrashers moved away from the city.

Soccer fans such as Chris Schmidt are convinced that this squad will be different: "We support what we support and soccer is a different animal than football, baseball, basketball," says Schmidt. "It appeals to a different type of person. Someone in the 20 to 34 age range. That's a young professional that wants to be passionate and involved in the community."

The hope is that the team will appeal to Atlanta's Hispanic community. Large crowds to recent soccer matches at the Georgia Dome show that Atlanta might be ready for a MLS team.
