CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A suspicious package that shut down Lake Shore Drive in the Uptown neighborhood Wednesday turned out to be a harmless duffle bag, police said.

The police Bomb and Arson Squad found the package in the 600 block of West Lawrence, according to police.

Someone called in to report the package at 11:52 a.m., but it wasn't identified until an hour later, police said.

The object turned out to be a duffle bag with a sleeping bag inside, police said.

Lake Shore Drive was shut down in both directions between Wilson and Foster avenues for the investigation, but all lanes were reopened as of 3 p.m., according to police.

A robot examined the package before authorities re-opened the Drive.

"My husband was stuck in that traffic jam. When he got home, he said, ‘Let's go see what's happening.' It was likely some homeless person's gear. They sleep here," said Karen Santor, 53, of Uptown, standing at the Lawrence Avenue overpass watching the drama unfold.

"They needed a robot and to shut down the drive? I think all of this nowadays is overkill. I understand yesterday was the anniversary of the Boston bombing. I get it. Still, it's just sad we have to go to such extremes."

More than half the population of New York City rides public transportation to work. No other metropolis in this country even approaches that percentage or the MTA's total number of riders. For that reason, New York likely ranks as the most energy-efficient city in the nation. But what would it take to make the city even more energy-efficient or even self-sufficient?
