Stereotypes Playing A Big Part In Politics

Posted: Updated:
Trenton, New Jersey (My9NJ) -

Governor Christie's 119th town hall meeting was held yesterday in Somerset, New Jersey and the reality is that residents aren't just looking at what the governor is saying, but also how he looks. Over a year ago Christie underwent a secret lap band surgery and you can't help but notice how Christie is looking a lot better physically, along with a healthy tan and new haircut. While many people don't want to think these kinds of things matter in politics, there is no denying that they do.

Image Consultant, Sylvie Di Giusto chimed in to discuss the politician's appearance.

"The public perception is that overweight leaders for example have a poor job performance or are less effective. And even if we think it's not right it's just what people think, and as a politician you have to think about what others think about you. Usually politicians want to make a non-issue on topics like this. Think about Hilary Clinton for example, people started talking about her hair when definitely something was wrong with her hair so she changed that image. Basically this is what Governor Christie does right now. He shows action, he shows discipline, he shows control. And that's something we want to see in a future leader," Di Giusto explained.

Unfortunately, stereotyping comes with the political territory. Di Giusto said this kind of typecasting actually plays a big part in politics. Many people use physical appearance to cast their vote rather than putting more weight on how a politician can hold their own politically.

"Still we think in stereotypes, we think in paddocks and just look into history of how many overweight presidents did we have in history? Not a lot. Or how many overweight CEO's to be seen in fortune 500 companies out there? Not a lot. So still he's (Christie) facing the challenge that we, the public perception, is that we think in stereotypes," she explained.
