Golden Gloves Boxing Finals Crowns A Victor!

Posted: Updated:
Jersey City, New Jersey (My9NJ) - Over the weekend, the Golden Gloves amateur boxing finals were held in Jersey City and while two-young men got into the ring to fight in their hometown, only one came out victorious, Tony Rivera!!

“Honestly the fight was a tough fight, the kid Denzel Stevens is an awesome fighter, and he came out to fight, and we gave the crowd what they came to see,” Rivera said.

Rivera proudly showed off his latest trophy along with the Diamond Glove award he won last year. Jersey City Director of Recreation Ryan Strother discussed how important this event was to Jersey City and offered some good advice for Rivera.

“Continue to listen to your coaches they’ve done a great job with you, I’m very proud of them also and good luck in the future absolutely, you deserve every bit of it” he said.

Rivera also commented on the recent melees happening in Jersey City schools where boxing isn’t necessarily being used as a sport but rather as a weapon. He explained that growing up on the streets you need to be tough in order to make it. Rivera said that he’s been extremely fortunate to be able to turn that passion and energy into a successful career.

“You have dreams and honestly when you work hard, those dreams become goals and you start scratching them off the list little by little,” he explained.

After the fight Rivera’s coach surprised him with a trip to the Bahamas’s where he is entered into a fight to try his hand at an international match.
