No kid ever grows up wanting to be lt. governor, the second banana in state government. In Michigan there is a rich history of the second-in-charge wanting to use the office as a stepping stone to the top job as governor. Turns out it’s been a slippery stone as only two of twelvel.g.'s actually made it.The two winners were lt. governor John Swainson who served as the right-hand man to Gov. Jennifer Granholm back in office?

Oh boy, the anti-Granholm mob will have fun with this.  They are talking in California about running the former Michigan governor for something as part of the “new generation” of D’s on the west bank.

First Carl Levin. Then John Dingell. Followed by Mike Rogers. Now Dave Camp. Whose next? Fred Upton?

The Michigan Congressional delegation, once the bastion of experience and Capitol Hill gravitas, is being prepped for a lousy case of freshman and womam-ittis.  Or put another way, out with the old and in with the new as this historic churn in the state’s delegation grinds away.

Is it something in the water or something else that has precipitated this brain drain which impacts the state’s seniority in Congress?

For Mr. Levin and Mr. Dingell it was just their time to exit before being carried out. Mr. Rogers, wants to play radio and maybe run for president. Mr. Camp looked at the landscape and while he didn’t say it, it may be that the Congress he entered is not the one he is leaving. Collegiality is but a fond memory and the same may holds true for Mr. Rogers.

Mr. Dingell did admit that as he’s witnessed the disintegration of bi-partisanship that dominated the halls of Congress prior to the Tea Party, the politics of division of Newt Gingrich and the like.

No one will ever write another book like the one about Democratic Speaker Tip O’Neil and the Gipper President Ronald Regan.  The two battled on the philosophical front, often agreed to disagreed but at the end of the day it was a productive relationship that advanced the people’s agenda.

There might have been a sequel about President Barack Obama and GOP House Speaker John Boehner but his right wing buddies would not permit a redo of Reagan and O’Neil.

So now you have a contested primary in the Roger’s mid-Michigan district where his early attempts to ordain Mike Bishop as his choice blew-up before it even began.  There won’t be a consensus candidate as too many egos, too many careers, and too many contenders refuse to take one for the team and back out.

It’s totally understandable.  Open seats in Congress don’t come often because once you get there, you never want to leave.  It’s really a job for life if you want it to be.  And now all these hopefuls are thinking I could break John Dingell’s record if I can just win this election.

So now back to the Upton question. Is the veteran West Michigan Republican next?  Target-Insight political guru Eddie Sarplous thinks so.  Why not?

Everybody else is jumping ship.
