New York radio hosts rip Mets player for taking paternity leave

(WJBK) -- New York Mets second baseman Daniel Murphy is about to miss his third straight game to begin the season. But he isn't missing time due to injury. Instead, he's taking time off for paternity leave.

And some people have an issue with that.

Mike Francesa, the popular New York sports radio personality, spent over 20 minutes Wednesday talking about, and objecting to, Murphy's leave.

"You're a Major League Baseball player, you can hire a nurse to take care of the baby if your wife needs help," Francesa said. "What are you gonna do? Are you gonna sit there and look at your wife in the hospital bed for two days?"

Murphy is well within his rights to miss. The league's collective bargaining agreement allows players to take three days for paternity leave.

Francesa isn't the only radio host to object to Murphy's decision. Former NFL quarterback Boomer Esiason said if it were him, he would've had his wife schedule a Caesarean section before the season started to avoid any conflict.
