MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) -

Cities looking to host the 2018 Super Bowl had a Tuesday deadline to submit their bids to the NFL. Minneapolis, New Orleans and Indianapolis are all contenders to host Super Bowl LII.

NEW STADIUM TO HOST?

At a news conference at the State Capitol in late January, Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton and a coalition of Minnesota business and community leaders presented the state's bid to bring the Super Bowl to the new Vikings stadium.

"The Super Bowl is the most watched annual event in the world. In addition to game attendees, it brings over 100,000 people to the host community for a weeklong celebration," Dayton said in a release. "Hosting the Super Bowl would bring enormous economic benefits to many Minnesota businesses, as well as provide a terrific opportunity to again showcase Minnesota to the world."

Dayton named three business leaders to co-chair the effort:

- Doug Baker, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer at Ecolab
- Marilyn Carlson Nelson, former Chairman and Chief Executive Officer at Carlson
- Richard Davis, Chairman/President/Chief Executive Officer at U.S. Bancorp

BID HIGHLIGHTS

- 19,000 rooms for four nights for Super Bowl fans
- Over 180 hotels available
- Recently expanded Mall of America
- 48 different venue options for Super Bowl Week
- Detailed description of practice sites
- Light rail transit to stadium

"The effort from the bid committee, as well as from Minnesota's business and community leadership, has been nothing short of outstanding," said Vikings president Mark Wilf. "NFL owners will greatly enjoy this community's hospitality, venues and energy. Minnesota will deliver an outstanding Super Bowl in 2018."

FINAL SELECTION

A final selection for the Feb. 4, 2018 game will be announced in May 2014 following the NFL Owners Meetings in Atlanta that take place May 19-21.

New Orleans hopes its 300th anniversary in 2018 will help champion more votes.

Indianapolis just held March Madness action at Lucas Oil Stadium, and before that, it hosted the Big Ten Tournament.

METRODOME MEMORIES

Minneapolis last hosted Super Bowl XXVI in 1992 at the Metrodome when the Washington Redskins faced the Buffalo Bills. Quarterback Mark Rypien and the Redskins defeated the Bills 37-24, making the Bills the third team -- after the Vikings and the Denver Broncos -- to lose back-to-back Super Bowls.
