Sinkhole swallows car on Long Island

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

A sinkhole managed to swallow up a car, after a water main ruptured on Long Island.

Crews attempted to shut off the water and drain the sinkhole on Anderson st. in Baldwin Saturday morning.

The roughly ten foot long, seven foot wide sinkhole ruptured the sidewalk and the street pavement pulling part of a four-door sedan inside.

Nassau Police say the water main break caused flooding in the street and in the yards of some nearby homes.

Crews from Long Island American Water, a contractor for the Town of Hempstead, were on the scene, on Anderson Street between Soper Avenue and Essex Court, attempting to shut off the water and drain the sinkhole.

The sinkhole, which was roughly 10 feet long and 7 feet wide, ruptured the sidewalk and the street pavement.

Nassau County police, which received a call about the water main break at 4:23 a.m., pulled the vehicle out of the sinkhole.

The vehicle's front tires were seen resting on a pipe that may have burst, witnesses said. The car sat on a flatbed tow truck early Saturday.

Police said there were no reported injuries.

Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
