Consumer Watchdog: Tony And Alana Pack Patient Safety Act

Posted: Updated:

Today's guest is Jamie Court, the president of ConsumerWatchdog.org.  The Santa Monica-based non-profit organization has its roots in Proposition 103, the 1985 initiative that stopped automobile insurance rates from skyrocketing in California.  Since then, ConsumerWatchdog.org has been one of the most aggressive consumer protection organizations in the nation.

This week's program will cover the Tony and Alana Pack Patient Safety Act, a new initiative that will be on the November 2014 ballot.  The Patient Safety Act will impose new safeguards to protect patients from abuses in the health care system.  For example, it will require drug testing for doctors, similar to the testing required for airline pilots.

ConsumerWatchdog.org has another initiative that will put health care insurance costs under the control of the California Insurance Commissioner.  It the same way the Proposition 103 helped to keep auto insurance affordable, this new initiative would prevent runaway increases in health insurance premiums.

The organization is working on several other projects.  Information about them is at ConsumerWatchdog.org.

Of all the world's religions, Buddhism is one of the most mysterious and most intriguing to many Americans. The books The Dharma Bums, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance and even If You Meet the Buddha on the Road, Kill Him!, are all examples of how Buddhist concepts are part of the American cultural landscape.
