Book: helping your kids with homework may do more harm than good

Helping your kid with their homework may not be helping much at all, according to a new study published in the book "The Broken Compass: Parental Involvement with Children's Education."

Co-author Angel Harris, a Duke University professor, explains that the study analyzed over 30 years' worth of surveys of American parents, and more than 60 different measures of parental participation -- from reading to helping with homework. The study found not all of these things promote higher academic results and can even hinder a student's performance when they hit middle school.

Harris said if a parent teaches a child algebra the way the parent learned and it is not the way it's taught now that could cause confusion and set the child back.

Eric Greenburg of Greenburg Educational Group says the study raises interesting points, but that each parent needs to really decide the appropriate level of involvement.
