Charter schools hold academic pep rally

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

A couple of thousand cheering students attended a pep rally in Washington Heights Tuesday -- not for any sport but for test taking. Next week, New York administers English and later math competency exams to all New York public school students. Many have called the exams too difficult and confusing. But this charter school group, 22 schools run by Eva Moskowitz, embraces the exams.

Charter schools have been running attack ads saying Mayor Bill de Blasio is anti-charter school. He campaigned saying charter schools took too many resources from traditional union public school. He stopped the co-location of Harlem Success Academy 4 in a traditional public school. But Sunday the mayor said he wanted to seek common ground with charter schools.

Charter schools still plan to sue the city for co-location space. And there have been no high-level meetings between eh two sides.

The rhetoric and animosity seems to have died down a bit between charter school supports and Mayor de Blasio. But the fundamental differences remain.

Much will depend on Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who is running for reelection this year. On April 1, he will present his state budget and how much charter schools will receive.

But, if you can believe it, there's something else this 4-year-old is even more excited about: Times Square is going gold. The chairman of the Times Square Advertising Coalition announced the crossroads of the world is going to light up in gold to raise awareness for pediatric cancer research.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
