East Hampton may ban booze at 2 beaches

Posted: Updated:

EAST HAMPTON, N.Y. (AP) - East Hampton is considering a summer ban on alcohol at two beaches.

The restriction would be in effect while lifeguards are on duty at the Indian Wells and Atlantic Avenue beaches.

It would prohibit drinking alcohol or carrying an open container within 2,500 feet of the lifeguard-protected areas.

Violators could be fined up to $50 and given 30 hours of community service.

The town board has given trustees a month to review the issue before scheduling a public hearing.

Newsday says rowdy crowds at Indian Wells were brought to the town's attention more than a year ago. More than 300 teenagers showed up after a website encouraged people to bring beer there.
