NEW JERSEY (MYFOXNY.COM) -

A search and rescue team saved a dog that had fallen into a ravine in the Garret Mountain Reservation in Passaic County, N.J., Monday afternoon.

It is not clear how the dog ended up about 50 feet down in between two rocks. She was likely stuck in the ravine overnight, said Fire Chief Brian McDermott.

Firefighters rappelled down into the ravine to pull out the pooch after other methods failed.

"It was about 20 inches wide, the space, what I did was support the front end so the dog wouldn't fall any further down the cliff. There was a member of a team inside that was able to grab the dog and pull him out through the hole. He was happy to see us," said Firefighter Angelica.

Animal control officers took custody of dog, which appears to be a poodle mix.

"I personally believe someone dumped off the dog or maybe someone is missing it for a couple of months now," said Chief Animal Control Officer John DeCando.
