Oldest Living Volunteer Firefighter Turns 90

Posted: Updated:

GLENDALE, AZ  - A fire department in Glendale, AZ honored the oldest living volunteer firefighter when he turned 90 on Sunday.

Charlie Bootz was greeted at his daughter's home as fire units pulled playing sirens and flashing lights.

The 90-year old received a plaque from Glendale City Councilman Ian Hugh, Assistant fire Chief Elio Pompa and former Glendale fire Chief Gary Crabtree.

The all-volunteer department began in 1912 and served the growing community through the Great Depression and the start of World War II.

"It didn't stop with just fighting fires, you got to know these people and enjoyed their company. It was a real honor to be a volunteer fireman," said Bootz.

The city hired its first full-time paid fire chief in the 1950s. A decade later, Glendale was able to show the need to employ its first full-time paid firefighters.

In 2013, more than 100 volunteers gave their time as safety educators, administration support and fire cadets.

The Crisis Response Team is made up of volunteers trained by the Glendale Fire Department and Maricopa Association Governments to assist firefighters, police officers and the citizens of the west Valley during 911 calls.
