Dentists Turns Ski Boat Into Ferry

Posted: Updated:

The Milton-Madison Bridge Closure is causing a real strain on many commuters, but there is still one way to make the trip across the Ohio River in just a few minutes.

FOX's Courtney Godfrey introduces us to a man who takes time out from his real job to give them a lift.

The bridge closure has put a huge strain on commuters from both Indiana and Kentucky, but thanks to a man who says he simply loves the river that commute has been made a whole lot easier.

It's not your traditional car pool and it's certainly not for everyone. But for these brave passengers, it beats the now hour-and-a-half it takes by car.

"It's a lot shorter, a little bumpier, a little chillier, but it's certainly worth it," said Ferry Passenger Carla Goins.

At the helm, Bob Canada converts his ski boat into a ferry every morning at 7a.m. and again at 4p.m.

"It's not really the best boat to be doing this with, but that's what we have," said Canada.

"He's dropping his boat in every morning. We thought he had a dock....ready for the people to go back and forth," said Steve Gamble, who works in Kentucky.

In return, the full-time dentist part-time captain asks for nothing.

"Everyone really appreciates what he is doing. And he won't take anything for it. Won't take any money. So he's just doing it out of the sweetness of his heart," said Amber Smith, who works in Indiana.

As Canada sees it, the journey is part of the fun.

"You couldn't hire me. You couldn't make me sign a contract. It's something we love to do. I'm 64 life doesn't go on forever. You don't want to pass things by," he said.

There's already a waiting list to get on Dr. Canada's boat. And with no re-opening date scheduled, he wouldn't be able to do it year-round, but he'll certainly try to do it until the bridge re-opens.

The New York City Department of Health has issued an alert after two babies were diagnosed with neonatal herpes this month after undergoing a ritual Jewish circumcision called metzitzah b'peh.  In this type of circumcision the mohel sucks blood directly from the infant's cut penis.  The infants need to be hospitalized and treated with intravenous acyclovir.
