Lawyer: Vet reaches $4.5M settlement with Oakland

Posted: Updated:

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — A lawyer for an Iraq War veteran who was hit by a police beanbag during an Occupy protest in Oakland says a $4.5 million settlement has been reached with the city.

Scott Olsen's attorney, Rachel Lederman, said on Friday the settlement still needs approval from the City Council to become final.

Olsen suffered a fractured skull when he was struck by the beanbag fired during a protest on Oct. 25, 2011. His attorneys say he has permanent brain injuries and hasn't been able to return to his career in the technology sector.

A separate report commissioned by the city concluded that police were not prepared to handle demonstrators who threw glass and other objects. The protests followed the removal of an Occupy encampment in front of City Hall.
