International Crime Gangs: California's New Threat

Posted: Updated:
Los Angeles, CA -

(FOX 11) A new report shows California is facing a growing threat...from international crime rings. It's a growing threat because California has had major budget cuts and criminals are taking advantage of it.

The new report from California's Attorney General shows the bad guys are going global...and they're focusing their attention on Southern California. Attorney general Kamala Harris was in LA yesterday, talking about the growing influence of cartels and trans-national gangs.

One key finding of her report involves: Meth. "70-percent" of the methamphetamine coming into the US from Mexico, enters through Southern California border crossings. From drugs, to the internet...Harris' report shows criminal outfits are becoming very tech-savvy. From 2008 to 2012, computer network breaches jumped by 280-percent nationally. Most of those crimes happened right here in California.

Yesterday, officials also criticized 'realignment', that's California's court-ordered plan to reduce prison overcrowding...by sending inmates to county jails. Many of those criminals are gang members.

Gil Otero, the DA for Imperial County says realignment is making California's 58 county jails - a new business for the Mexican Mafia.

Otero says the Mexican Mafia controls prison drug trade and by moving those prisoners, the mafia now has 58 more shops to do their businesses.

Next week, Attorney General Harris will travel to Mexico to meet with officials in hopes of strengthening the fight against trans-national crime.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
