Detroit ticketing blitz to make streets safer

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) -

Some may call it Spring Cleaning, but the Detroit Police Department calls it Operation Spring Thaw.

Thursday the Detroit Police Department teamed up with the U.S. Border Patrol, Michigan State Police and the Wayne County Sheriff Department to enforce a traffic blitz.

Operation Spring Thaw is a zero tolerance, traffic and vehicle code enforcement initiative in response to the recent increase in hit-and-runs and single motor vehicular accidents resulting in death.

Officers wrote several tickets, impounded several cars and even made arrests during the blitz.

Captain Charles Mahone says the department did a traffic blitz earlier this week that resulted in 120 tickets.

Police say the warmer temperatures tend to encourage faster speeds, and in a city that's seen too many deadly accidents police are trying to be proactive.

Dunkin' Brands CEO Nigel Travis said in a phone interview Thursday that the company is pushing to get its cashiers to "upsell" to afternoon customers. It's part of an effort to increase sales after stores have emptied out after the morning rush.
