Weekend Roundup: Bigmista's BBQ, Augie's Side Effect & The Family Crest

Posted: Updated:

FOX 11's food and fun expert Mar Yvette searches the Los Angeles area for some of the best places to eat, drink, shop and have a great time. Featured guests then swarm our FOX Television Center parking lot every Thursday morning between 9am and 10am on Good Day LA, creating a big party as one jam-packed segment known as the Weekend Roundup!

Here's more information about the guests we featured:

Bigmista's BBQ

Real. Good. Meat. That's what Bigmista's BBQ is all about. Neil "Bigmista" Strawder, Phyllis "Mrs. Mista" Strawder and their team cook meat the way it was meant to be: slow and low over an open fire. All the juicy morsels of seasoned beef, pork and poultry that come out of the smoker so tender there are no words… except mmmmmm! You can taste this barbecue--along with food from more than 50 other top pit masters--this Saturday, March 22, at the Santa Anita Winners' Circle BBQ Championships. The annual event includes live music, arts & crafts and a children's play area. The BBQ Championship is free with $5 admission to the track. Tasting tickets are $1 each, sold in packs of 10. Get ready for a lip-smacking good time!

Augie's Side Effect

It's not a party until Augie's Side Effect is in the house! My favorite acapella group has been singing for decades and they always bring a smile to everyone's face. Founder Augie Johnson was one of the backup singers on Michael Jackon's 1979 breakthrough album "Off The Wall" and he's performed for everyone from Frank Sinatra to Leonardo DiCaprio. Stay tuned for their upcoming album later this year. Finally a side effect that feels good!

The Family Crest

It's a flute, a trombone, a violin ... it's The Family Crest! Fresh from their stint at SXSW, San Francisco-based orchestral indie rock band The Family Crest is here to perform "As We Move Forward" from their new album "Beneath the Brine," which debuted at #16 on the Billboard Heatseekers Album Chart. With a distinct sound inspired by many genres including jazz, folk and classical, this seven-piece band has been gaining new fans and garnering rave reviews from all around the world. You can catch their show tonight (March 20) at The Satellite in Silver Lake.
