NTSB: East Harlem gas main failed pressure test

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

The National Transportation Safety Board go-team investigating the deadly explosion in East Harlem has found a leak in the 8-inch gas main adjacent to one of the two buildings destroyed in the blast.

The main, which is made of cast-iron and plastic, failed a pressure test, the NTSB said. The team pumped tracer gas into the main and found a leak next to 1646 Park Avenue.

Also, the NTSB has tagged two service line segments found in the basements of the destroyed buildings as evidence and will ship them to the NTSB lab in D.C., according to the board.

Pressure testing to the gas service lines feeding the buildings adjacent to the destroyed ones is continuing but nothing significant has turned up yet, the NTSB also announced.

The explosion on March 12 killed eight people. The NTSB has not identified a cause of the blast. That will be part of the board's final report at the end of its probe.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
