Princeton Mom Talks Marriage & Today’s Hook-Up Culture

Posted: Updated:
Princeton, New Jersey (My9NJ) - Some people know her as Princeton mom and others as Susan Patton. Regardless of what you call her, she’s made headlines all over the world the last year because of some controversial advice she gives in her book Marry Smart.

The book focuses on Patton’s views on how Princeton women should prioritize finding a Princeton husband while still in school and possibly even get plastic surgery in order to do so. Patton defended what she meant.

“It was more directed to parents of young women, very young women, high school aged women. If your daughters have been struggling with obesity, like morbid obesity, we’re not talking about vanity surgery for breast enlargement, that’s not it. But for a young woman who’s been struggling for a dozen years with morbid obesity, do your daughter a favor and help her come to a point in her own physical self where she’s prepared to enter her prime dating years, I’m saying those are your college years, feeling good about who she is. What this girl really needs clearly is intervention, medical intervention to help her get in a physical state where she loves herself,” she explained.

Some argue that the pressure shouldn’t all be on the woman to look their best in order to catch the guy. Shouldn’t men have some of this responsibility as well? Patton says it doesn’t really work that way.

“Wouldn’t that be great if they did? And some of them do, however, you can’t equate what men need to do with what women need to do and here’s why. Men can take their whole lives to get married and have children. Women don’t have that kind of time. Think about it. Women, their fertility pretty much runs out at about 35 let’s say,” she explained.

In addition, Patton explains that today’s “hook-up culture” has been a huge problem for women and for marriage.

“Men certainly aren’t going to buy the cow if the milk is free. By offering sex without commitment, women have eliminated the incentive for men to commit,” she stated.
