SEPTA Transit Officer Attacked At Broad & Fairmount

Posted: Updated:

A Septa police officer is being hailed a hero for keeping everyone safe, after a man, riding a septa train goes on a wild ramp page and it is all caught on video.

A Temple University student, Jim McGinnly, shot cell phone video, he says he rides septa all the time and is never, ever seen anything like this.

The attack took place on septa's broad street line, yesterday afternoon. The officer responded to a call about a deranged rider claiming to have a gun was threatening to shoot people. Septa cameras caught violent struggle as officer approached the man and this guy goes after the officer and he just won't stop.

As soon as the officer had the guy on the ground the passengers converged and tried to help officer the as best they can but officer was overpowered.

"The guy, he looked like a very strong guy," explains McGinnly.

Inspector Steven Harold of Septa police continues "the officer is actually struggling getting knocked to the ground and in hand and hand combat. In the very tack full way the officer is able to maintain control. The individual is on the bottom, the officer's gun is in his hand. The individual is trying to grab the officer's gun.  He is trying to take weapon out of the officer's holster. But because of our equipment accounts the weapon maintained inside that holster safely. "

Septa police say the man who claimed to have a gun actually did not but he was completely out of control, investigators suspect he was high on the drug, wet.

The man actually went back on the train and tries to grab a baby out of his mother's arm. Two Septa officers arriving as backup finally take this man down.

He was arrested for aggravated assault on a police officer and other charges.

That officer was taken to Hahnemann University Hospital where he was treated and released this morning.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
