S. Nassau Communities Hospital issues virus exposure warning

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Some patients who were treated at South Nassau Communities Hospital may be at risk of contracting HIV and hepatitis B and C, the hospital announced. The hospital is warning patients who received insulin injections they may have been exposed to the viruses.

The hospital, in Oceanside, sent letters to 4,247 patients in February recommending they get tested as a precaution. The hospital is working with the New York State Department of Health to notify patients.

Patients may have received insulin that was used by more than one patient, the hospital said. Apparently a nurse was overheard saying patients may have received insulin from an insulin pen reservoir instead of its single-use disposable needle.

Hospital officials say no one actually saw the nurse use the needle more than once, but they sent out the letters out of an abundance of caution. Officials say that patients' risk of infection is "extremely low."

If you are one of those patients who received a letter, you can schedule a blood test by calling: 516-208-0029.

Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
