Country's Oldest Mayor Seeks Re-Election

Posted: Updated:

At age 93, Apopka Florida's mayor is said to be the oldest in the country and after twenty terms in office, he's the state's longest serving mayor.

But age and time aren't stopping him from running for re-election. FOX News correspondent Steve Harrigan has that story.

There are two secrets, John Land says, to getting re-elected for sixty one years. First, tell the truth.

"People know you and you have got to be held to what you say you're going to do and I think that's where the local self-government is the keystone to American democracy," he said.

The second is love.

I love Apopka and if you love Apopka, really it is loving the people of Apopka and I think I fell in love with Apopka back when I think I was about 5 years old and people would walk by our home place which I'm still living in the same place and made friends," Land said.

At age 93, he runs Orange County's second largest city with a $66 million dollar budget. That budget was just $30,000 when he was first elected in 1949.

There was plenty of open land back then for hunting and fishing, but the mayor is not nostalgic.

"The good old days are really right now, because I can remember when somebody got hurt you'd have to wait for an ambulance from Orlando to come up. That took an hour and an hour to go back. If someone was really hurt that golden hour was lost," LAND said.

Often unopposed in the past this time he faces three challengers. The hot button issues are red-light cameras, beer sales on Sunday and downtown development. No one says the mayor is too old.

"I admire John land I respect him. I wouldn't care if he was 103 if Apopka was living up to its potential," said Mayoral Candidate Joe Kilsheimer.

The nature of this election has led to some unusual campaign slogans including sixty one years of excuses will no longer be tolerated.
