Last Minute Decision Keeps Man From Seat On Malaysia Flight

Posted: Updated:

As global authorities focus on the search for a missing aircraft in Southeast Asian waters, Greg Candelaria is focusing on his growing family.

"This is the new baby," he said, pointing a picture on his computer screen.  "Her name is Dani.  They're over there right now."

Candelaria's daughter is in China, wrapping up the adoption process for her third daughter.  Originally booked on board the now missing flight MH370, this grandfather of three is grateful destiny intervened with his travel plans.

"I think this is a God thing," he said.  " I don't think it's coincidence."

Candelaria works in global technology services and  frequently flies around the world.

He was in Japan three weeks ago, flew to Houston for five days, then left to Spain.  He had hoped to fly from Spain to Malaysia for a scheduled business trip, but company policy mandated he fly back to Houston for the flight to Asia.

That policy coupled with travel fatigue prompted him to opt out of his scheduled business trip to both Singapore and Malaysia.  If all had gone as planned, he would've been on the Beijing bound flight that vanished over the weekend.

"Part of my motivation was to fly over there on business and meet my daughter and my new granddaughter,"  Candalaria said.  " And I didn't go.  Even with that reason being.  Going to meet my granddaughter in China would've been an amazing experience."

A co-worker made the trip instead, but was lucky enough to book a different flight.
