Tucson woman prepares for hike across Arizona

TUCSON, Ariz. -

A Tucson woman is preparing for a trek of a lifetime.

She plans to hike 817 miles from the Mexico border, across the State of Arizona, to Utah.

It's all for a good cause to raise awareness and money for the Arizona National Scenic Trail.

Sirena Dufault plans to leave Tucson on March 14th, travel all the way across the state, and end up 2 and half months later at the Utah border.

"On Friday March 14th I'm going to start the Arizona Trail trek," said Dufault.

And once 40 year-old Dufault starts she won't stop until she makes it all 817 miles across the state to the Utah border.

"It's a hike to not only just hike the tail for the fun of it but to promote the trail itself to people who might not know about it," said Dufault.

As a way to promote the Arizona Trail, which was completed in 2011, she'll be making stops along the way to invite the communities bordering the trail to hike along with her and learn about this unique trail.

"A trail is no good unless people know about it and use it and so this is a big part of it, a big push to not only tell people about the trail but invite them along with me," said Dufault.

The process of planning a 2.5 month hike has not been easy especially figuring out where to eat and where to sleep.

"A big part of the planning has been where am I going to get my resupply and where am I going to get food. I have packed up all of my food for the entire trip already and they will be sent to me in different parts of the trail," she said.

With just a few days left until she leaves Sirena says she's excited. "I just can't wait to get out on the trail and take my first steps," she said.

Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
