Kids Who Watch More TV May Get Too Little Sleep

Kids who watch as little as ninety minutes of television a day may get less sleep than those who don't watch much TV at all.

Spanish researchers questioned parents of more than seventeen hundred preschool and school-aged children about the time they spent watching TV and sleeping.

They found children who watched TV for one and a half hours or more a day slept less than kids with less TV time, and the moreTV watching increased, the more essential sleep time decreased.

Experts say the remedy is to not use TV as a baby-sitter, but to limit the amount of TV kids watch and monitor the programs they see.

Information on the content of the television programs was lacking in the Spanish study, so it's not possible to say which specific types of TV shows influence sleep.

In addition, there was no data available on TV watching or children's physical activity levels,which may affect sleep quality as well. Findings appear online in the journal "JAMA Pediatrics."
