Professor Pushes Colleges To Do More After Student's Suicide

PHILADELPHIA -

A University of Pennsylvania professor is pushing for new laws after his former student took her own life earlier this year.

Madison Holleran, 19, jumped to her death from a Philadelphia parking garage on Jan. 17.

According to reports, the freshman's father says she was overwhelmed in college and struggling with school work. He said she told them about her thoughts of suicide and was seeing a psychiatrist.

Madison's former teacher, Edward Modica, posted this petition on MoveOn.org called "Passage Of The Madison Holleran Law."

The law would require universities to keep statistics on suicides and attempted suicides on their campuses every year.

In addition, it would require schools to provide certified suicide prevention personnel counselors.

By Tuesday morning, more than 3,400 people had signed the petition.

The petition states that the goal is to reach 4,000 signers and have it delivered to the New Jersey State House.
