Judge sets trial date for Bob Bashara in wife's strangling

Posted: Updated:

DETROIT (WJBK) -- The trial for Bob Bashara, the Grosse Pointe Park businessman charged in the death of his wife, will begin in October.

Judge Vonda Evans set a trial date of Oct. 6, 2014 during a hearing on Tuesday.

Bashara is charged with first-degree murder in the killing of 56-year-old Jane Bashara. Authorities say she was beaten and strangled at the couple's Grosse Pointe Park home in January 2012 and her body left in a car in a Detroit alley.

Handyman Joe Gentz is in prison after pleading guilty to second-degree murder. He has said Robert Bashara threatened to kill him unless he followed orders and killed Jane Bashara.

Robert Bashara in media interviews repeatedly has denied any role. He pleaded guilty in 2012 to trying to have Gentz killed in jail.

In February, Judge Evans pulled Bashara's defense team from the Legal Aid and Defender's office off the case, concerned they were not able to provide the proper resources to represent him.

Evans said at that time attorneys David Cripps and Gabi Silver would be appointed - but that is not what happened Tuesday in court.

Judge Evans appointed David Cripps and Lillian Diallo instead.

That led to a thirty minute conference in the judge's chambers, then Judge Evans announced she was not going to enter an order appointing Cripps, leaving Bashara's legal team in limbo.

Judge Evans said she will make a decision April 4 as to who will represent Bashara in that October trial.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
