A recent study found women consume more social media than men, and this usage is occurring primarily on mobile devices.

Nielsen Media Research published its findings in a quarterly report on digital device consumption in the U.S.

“When looking at U.S. smartphone users, women win the battle of the sexes in terms of time spent on media via apps and the mobile Web,” The report states.

An estimated 89 percent of all smartphone use was done through mobile apps, the data show. Men on average spent 29 hours and 33 minutes on mobile apps per month, and women spent 30 hours and 58 minutes per month using apps.

Those numbers line up with a recent post from financesonline.com. Using data from the Pew Research and Burst Media, Finances Online found that more women consume social media than men. For instance, 76 percent of all women studied said they have a Facebook account, compared to 66 percent of men.

Out of the women surveyed for the study, 78 percent report they access social media through a mobile device, compared to 63 percent of men.

Overall, the report from Nielsen Media Research found that Americans spend an average of 11 hours per day of cumulative media consumption, according to Mashable.com. These sources include live TV, radio, smartphones, Internet on a desktop computer, gaming consoles and DVD and Blue Ray players.
