Cops cracking down on bikers

With the weather getting nicer and more people out on the streets this weekend, the NYPD conducted a crack down on illegal and unlicensed bikers. However, legal motorcycle riders are hoping they're not stigmatized in the process.

There are many videos posted on line showing bikers in close calls with pedestrians and cars on crowded city streets. The NYPD wants it to stop and says special patrols in Harlem and Washington Heights this weekend resulted in 3 arrests and the confiscation of 8 dirt bikes and 4 wheelers called quads. Weary residents says it’s time for the stunts to stop.

“I am very concerned because I cross the street with my son everyday and they never look,” said one resident.

The NYPD does not pursue illegal bikers, because they say it's too dangerous. But they did chase one of the men on foot, cuffing him near West 138th street and Broadway.

Two of the men arrested are in their 20s; the third is a sanitation worker in his 40s.

Legal bikers like Jermaul Holloman of the Brooklyn Alliance of Abate, a biker education group, says not all bikers are outlaws.

“I think the crackdown might be needed for some,” Holloman said. “But it’s about not targeting everyone because not everyone is out there acting crazy driving in the street; most of them are law abiding citizens.”

Some of those arrested in last fall's Range Rover road rage incident in Manhattan are still going through the court system. At the same time, the illegal bikes and quads are becoming more popular and the unlicensed riders bolder in taunting police. A police officer was seriously injured in Brooklyn recently when the ATV driver he stopped dragged him and ran over his leg in a wild getaway.

Police routinely confiscate illegal bikes, but it’s clear this weekend they wanted to send a message at the start of a new season.
