Gun and bullet found at middle school, two students face expulsion

MARICOPA, Ariz. -

Students tipped the principal's office that two kids brought a gun and a bullet to school. Moments later the middle school and a nearby elementary school was placed into lockdown while police, with guns drawn, looked for the weapon.

That tip turned out to be accurate and Maricopa Police located a bullet and a firearm. Officials say the system put in place to prevent gun violence at a school worked, in part thanks to some students who heard something and said something.

School officials were notified when the students reported the gun and bullet to staff in the principal's office at Desert Wind Middle School. The school took the threat seriously and notified the Maricopa Police Department.

"it is the judgement call of the administrator, in this case the assistant principal, and he asked school to go into lockdown," said Maricopa Schools Superintendent Steve Chestnut.

Maricopa Police officers found a backpack with a nine millimeter bullet inside. And they found a nine millimeter gun hidden in a boys' bathroom.

The Maricopa Unified School District stresses it followed all the proper procedures and students were never in danger during this incident.

Two students were arrested, One is 12, the other 13. Both students now face expulsion from school.

"I am very pleased with the way the district school and Police handled the situation at the end of the day every student went home safely including mine," said Tena Dugan who has a child at the school.

Friday, as the school headed into spring break, it was calm at Desert Wind. "My daughter when I talked to her  she was a little afraid during the incident, but they have done enough lockdown drills that everything went very smoothly," said Patti Coutre.

More than half the population of New York City rides public transportation to work. No other metropolis in this country even approaches that percentage or the MTA's total number of riders. For that reason, New York likely ranks as the most energy-efficient city in the nation. But what would it take to make the city even more energy-efficient or even self-sufficient?
