Mayors discuss issues facing big U.S. cities

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

The mayors of New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Atlanta came together and discussed leadership and the unique issues facing the nation's big cities.

Bill de Blasio of New York, Eric Garcetti of Los Angeles, Rahm Emanuel of Chicago and Kasim Reed of Atlanta spoke Thursday at the University of Chicago.

The four mayors' metro areas are home to 20% of America's people. They discussed the crises of urban governance they all face and exchanged wisecracks, including inevitably by the mayor of drought-stricken Los Angeles, a shot at Chicago's Arctic-style winter weather.

All four mayors agreed that the most urgent crisis they face involves public schools and their related financial issues. Mayor Emanuel lamented how the school debate is all too often about everything except the kids.

All four are Democrats.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
