Probe Begins Into Deadly Condos Explosion After Gas Leak

Investigators are returning Wednesday to the scene where a massive explosion in Mercer County left one person dead, seven injured, 10 residences flattened and others at least temporarily uninhabitable.

They have determined 55 units are damaged and 20 are inhabitable inhabitable at this particular time. 

One victim is in serious condition but stable and two other are still in the hospitals.

The blast happened around 1 p.m. Tuesday on Crockett Lane in the South Fork at Ewing condominium complex in the Mountainview area of the township.

PSE&G says a contractor was doing some work when the workers hit a gas line. The utility says the line didn't rupture.

But something exploded, as you can see from videos sent to us by FOX 29 viewers as well as scenes of the aftermath.

Witnesses said they feared the worst when they heard and felt the blast.

Many people spent the night at a temporary shelter at the West Trenton Volunteer Fire Co. as they wait to hear if and when they can return home. Others are making plans on where to stay. Many say they're just thankful to be alive.

The body of one resident, a 62-year-old woman, was found on the roof of a car. The woman's identity has not been released.

Officials say a contractor was digging to perform electrical work to that woman's home when they apparently struck a gas line. They called in for assistance, including to PSE&G, and there was an "ignition" around 1 p.m., the utility says.

All seven of the injured are utility workers. Two were taken to the Hopewell campus of Capital Health Hospital. The other five were taken to the Trenton campus, where only one required emergency surgery. All are in good condition.

However, many are still shaken by the blast.

PS&G issued a statement saying "our hearts go out to the family and friends of the woman who lost her life and to the families who have been displaced from their homes."

Investigators will continue their search for the cause of the explosion Wednesday.

They are thankful for the community's outreach.
